Wooden Horizontal Abacus - Addition & Subtraction

Ask your child to slide four beads across, then two more, and count the whole group: the answer is right there under their fingers. Taking away works the same way in reverse, beads pushed back to the starting side. Because each sum stays visible on the wire, a child can check their own answer simply by counting again.

How children use a wooden abacus at home

Set the frame flat on a low table with all the beads on the left. Start with plain counting, one bead at a time, saying each number aloud. Once that feels easy, move on to small additions on a single wire, then use two wires to compare quantities: which row has more, and by how many?

The arched wires give the beads a clear path, which suits small hands still learning to move one bead without dragging its neighbours. That careful finger work is a skill in itself.

Abacus wood colours and size

The frame comes in natural wood, blue or green. At 30 cm wide it sits comfortably on a child's table and stays put during play, as the coloured version weighs a little more at 670 g.
